Melanin is a natural substance and skin pigment produced by the body as a defense to the negative and harmful effect and damage of sunlight primarily to the skin and the eyes. The melanin treated lens of the Sundog Sunglasses reduces the risk of macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is an eye condition prevalent on older people and the major cause of visual impairment and blindness for the older adults. It is the result in loss of vision in the center eye area of the eye’s visual field. An area called the macula, the yellow spot near the center of the human eye retina. The photoprotective technology and the melanin-based lens technology has been integrated by the world’s best optical sundog sunglasses and eyewear lens manufacturer. An original technology initiated by Sundog Eyewear.

Sundog Sunglasses was honored to have the exclusive global agreement and collaboration with Photoprotective Technology on all its melanin treated lenses. And although the original technology developed by Sundog of its melanin treated lenses has been imitated by many on the eyewear industry. For over thirty years of intensive testing on the Mela Lens Technology and to further enhance the Sundog sunglasses lenses, the originally created Mela Lens Technology was further innovated to intensify the filtering of the harmful blue light. Blue Light causes the risk of skin aging. The latest technology, blocks 100% UVA and UVB protection. Sundog Sunglasses also prevent the penetration of the high energy visible blue light.

The overall result of all these high performing technologies efficiently deals off the heavy glare and the harmful effects of ultraviolet on the retinal portion and the fast aging on the skin in and around the eye area brought by the intense blue light and ultimately enhance visual clarity, comfort, and health. There really is no lens compared to the original technology developed for Sundog Sunglasses. The technology initiated by Sundog Eyewear was replicated by many yet the original technology remains superior and hardly seconded by any of its competitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prescription Sunglasses

How do I order prescription sunglasses online?

Pick a frame, choose “Add Prescription”, select your lens options, and upload your prescription. If you don’t have PD (pupillary distance), we’ll help you measure it after checkout.

What prescriptions can you make? Are there limits?

We can accommodate most single-vision and progressive prescriptions. Very strong prescriptions or high wrap frames may require specific lens materials or frame styles. Our opticians review every order and will confirm feasibility before we start.

Can you make wrap-around or sport sunglasses in prescription?

Yes — many sport/wrap styles support prescription lenses. In some cases we’ll recommend Trivex or high-index materials, flatter base curves, or an insert to maintain optical performance. We’ll advise the best route for your Rx and sport.

Single-vision, bifocal, or progressive—what’s best for sunglasses?

Single-vision is ideal for distance (driving, outdoor sports). Progressives add seamless near/intermediate zones for dashboards, phones, or maps. If you prefer a visible line, flat-top bifocals are also available in many tints.

Which lens materials do you offer (and why)?

  • Polycarbonate: Lightweight, impact-resistant—great for most prescriptions.
  • Trivex: Exceptional clarity + impact resistance; excellent for wrap/sport frames.
  • High-index: Thinner/lighter for strong prescriptions.

Are prescription sunglasses polarized? Should I choose polarization?

Polarization is optional but strongly recommended for cutting glare from water, snow, and pavement. It’s ideal for driving, fishing, and boating. Note: some LCD screens (dash displays) can appear darker with polarized lenses.

Do photochromic (Transitions®) sunglasses work in the car?

Standard photochromics are UV-activated and may darken less behind a windshield. We also offer sun-optimized or fixed-tint options if maximum in-car darkness is your priority.

What tints do you recommend for driving, fishing, golf, cycling, or shooting?

  • Driving: Neutral gray or brown (polarized) for comfort and true color.
  • Fishing/Water: Polarized gray/blue or brown/green to cut surface glare.
  • Golf: Brown/amber or rose-copper to enhance contrast on greens.
  • Cycling: Brown/rose for variable light, mirror for bright days.
  • Shooting: Purpose tints (e.g., orange/copper/rose) tuned to background and light—available in Rx.

Can I get mirrored or gradient tints in prescription?

Yes. We offer mirrored, flash, and gradient tints on many lens colors and materials. Mirrors reduce surface brightness and add style without changing the underlying tint function.

Do you recommend anti-reflective (AR) coating on sunglasses?

Yes — premium back-surface AR reduces reflections from behind you (e.g., sunlight entering around the frame) and improves clarity. It also helps keep lenses cleaner.

How do I provide my prescription and PD (pupillary distance)?

Upload your Rx during checkout or email it after ordering. If your PD isn’t listed, we’ll send an easy guide to measure it accurately or coordinate with your eye care provider.

How long does a prescription sunglasses order take?

Most orders ship in 10–14 business days depending on lens complexity and frame availability. We’ll keep you updated at each step.

What is your return/remake policy for prescription sunglasses?

Prescription lenses are custom-made and non-refundable, but we offer a one-time lens remake to get things right. Non-prescription items follow our standard 30-day return policy for unused products.

Can I use HSA/FSA or insurance for prescription sunglasses?

Yes — HSA/FSA cards are typically accepted for Rx eyewear. For vision insurance, we can provide an itemized receipt for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

How do you ensure proper fit, PD/OC alignment, and optics in curved frames?

We verify PD/OC placement, base curve, and lens thickness during fabrication. For wraps, we select suitable materials and geometry to maintain clarity and minimize peripheral distortion.

How do I clean and care for prescription sunglasses (and what’s covered by warranty)

Rinse dust first, then use lens cleaner and a microfiber cloth—no paper products or harsh chemicals. Frames are covered by the brand’s warranty; our premium AR options include a manufacturer warranty against defects.

Shipping

How much is international shipping?

International shipping costs vary by country and carrier. When you enter your shipping address in the checkout process, Shopify automatically calculates the total charges—including shipping fees, taxes, and import duties (if applicable). This means you’ll see the full cost upfront before you finalize your purchase. Please note that some countries include tariffs and taxes in the shipping calculation, while others may collect them separately upon delivery. The checkout page will always give you the most accurate estimate available for your location.

How long will it take to receive my order?

Standard shipping normally takes 3-5 days. Next day shipping is available on all domestic orders (for an additional charge). International shipping times depend on the products and destination (estimated at checkout).

What countries do you ship to?

We currently ship to the United States, Canada, Australia and the UK. To enquire about shipping to a different destination, please contact us.
