Eye Injury First Aid - What Are You Missing?

Eye injury first aid

Our eyes are very delicate. Because of thatퟀ it's important to treat any eye injury as soon as possible. The type of eye injury first aid that you use will depend on the injury sustained. This article will concentrate on how to care for the two most common eye injuriesퟀ -ퟀ the presence of foreign bodies (for instance splinters or specks of grit) ퟀ and the presence of harmful substances (for example,ퟀ chemicals that splash into it).

1. Stay Still

The first thing to do when you have an eye injury of any kind is to keep your eye still. Don't roll your eye. You may cause a chemical contaminant to spread or a foreign body to move along the eye, which could lead to it scratching your eye. If you have a foreign body in your eye, you can try blinking gently one or two times to see if that dislodges it.Also Read:ퟀ Best Nighttime Eyewear For Activites

2. Use Plenty of Water

Take some clean water or sterile saline solution to flush out your eye. This will both help to flush outퟀ chemical contaminants and dislodge foreign body. Use copious amounts of water/ solution. Saline solution is an important item to carry in yourퟀ first aid kit when you are traveling. This is especially important when travelling where there might not be any clean water around.

3. Go to a Health Professional

If your eye is still in pain after you've treated it, it is important to go toퟀ a doctor. If the chemical splash was serious, or if the foreign body was very sharp, it is essential to have your eye treated professionally. Rinsing your eye out with clean water will suffice for a speck of dust that has found its way into your eye - a shard of glass is a different matter!

Things Not To Do

  • If you can feel a foreign body at the back of your eye,do not attempt to remove it yourself.
  • Don't use tweezers or any other instruments to try and remove anything from your eye -this could cause further damage .
  • Don't wait it too long before tending to your eye injury symptoms - even a small piece of grit can lacerate your eye if it is not flushed out quickly, and chemical splashes can worsen the longer your eye is left untreated.

Look after your eyes, no matter what you are doing.
