The official Minnesota flower is the beautiful pink and white Lady’s Slipper (Cypripedium reginae), also known as the Showy Lady’s Slipper or Queen’s Lady Slipper. The Lady’s Slipper gets its name from the white pouch (slipper) that is streaked by pink underneath white petals. They grow slowly and can take up to 16 years to flower, but on average, they can live for 50 years. While this lovely lady is one of 43 orchid species in the state, this wildflower is rare and protected by law. The best way to see them in large numbers is to embark on The Lady Slipper Scenic Byway, between Cass Lake and Blackduck Minnesota, which boasts over 10,000 Showy Lady’s Slippers.
